Highlighted Projects:

Educational Research:

Development of a World Wide Web instructional delivery system for horticulture foundation courses. Dr. McKenney with Drs. Ellen Peffley and Rick Durham have worked on a USDA Higher Education Challenge Grants to prepare two courses "Principles of Horticulture" and "Plant Propagation" as web based classes with accommodation to retain the laboratory science status of the classes.

Designing a horticulture laboratory course to accommodate students with disabilities. Dr. McKenney with Drs. Ellen Peffley, Rick Durham, and Thayne Montauge have developed a laboratory course that allows students with learning disabilities to participate in a horticulture course for laboratory science credit.

Medicinal Plants:

New crops for the Southern Great Plains. Dr. McKenney with Drs. Dick Auld, Vivian Allen, and Rick Durham have worked on a USDA Fund for Rural America grant looking at alternative crops. Dr. McKenney and Dr. Auld have focused on Oenothera, Echinacea and Ginkgo as high value alternative crops with medicinal value for the Texas High Plains.

Commercialization of Israel and Texas plant species as high value crops in arid environments. Dr. McKenney with Drs. Dick Auld and Zohara Yaniv and B Heuer have pursued this Texas Department of Agriculture-Texas Israel Exchange Program grant looking at medicinal plants which will flourish in both environments.

Roadside Vegetation Management:

Right-of-way mowing height research. Dr. McKenney with Drs. John Borrelli, Ron Sosebee, and Richard Zartman are developing new mowing height recommendations for this Texas Department of Transportation project.

Integrated roadside management system. Dr. McKenney with Drs. Zartman, Boreelli, and Sosebee are revising the roadside vegetation management manual for the Texas Department of Transportation.

Primary Teaching Emphasis:

Herbaceous and Woody Plant Materials; Interiorscaping; and Garden Center Management.

Primary Research Emphasis:

Horticultural Research in Ornamental Plants for Semiarid Regions; Water Conserving Landscapes; Ornamental and Native Grasses; and Alternative Uses for Native Plants. Educational Research in Alternative Delivery Methods for Horticultural Courses and Career Paths of Academicians.

Primary Extension Emphasis:

Ornamental Plant Selection for Demanding Environments; Use of Color in the Landscape; Garden Design.
