Turfgrass Management - Extension

Highlighted Projects:

Sports Field Management. Turfgrass management is the second-largest industry in the state of Texas and sports fields management is a large part of the turfgrass program. As the population of Texas increases, the demand for quality sports fields also increases. Dr. McAfee is working with schools and cities to help them construct, renovate and maintain sports fields. Management of these fields is based on using integrated pest management principles for pest and weed control. Also, Dr. McAfee works with these sports field managers to maintain quality playing fields with less water.

Weed Control. Dr. McAfee works with industry leaders and turf managers to evaluate new herbicides for effective weed control. At the same time he studies existing herbicides to see how effective weed control can still be achieved using smaller amounts and/or fewer applications.

Primary Research and Extension Emphasis:

Develop educational material and programs to help home owners, golf course superintendents, sports field managers and all other turfgrass managers produce quality turf. Main emphasis is to develop turf management programs that require fewer inputs of fertilizer, pesticides and water. Evaluate new turfgrass varieties for use in home lawns, golf courses and sports fields.

Experience:

Area Extension Turfgrass Specialist, Texas Agricultural Extension Service. Private Turfgrass Consultant for professional turfgrass managers. Regional Technical Manager, ChemLawns Services Corporation. State Turfgrass Specialist, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
