Pigeonpea
Funding source:
Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program (S-SARE).
Objectives:
Investigate the use of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) as a source of forage and grain for southern farms.
Evaluate its ability to increase water infiltration and reduce rainwater runoff.
Methodology:
Pigeonpea is being evaluated in three studies;
- A runoff study is being conducted at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Dallas to identify which pigeonpea variety (Georgia 1 or Georgia 2) and plant population most effectively reduces rainwater runoff from pasture compared to a grass control.
- On-farm Studies studies are being conducted in De Soto and Hunt counties in Texas to determine if pigeonpea direct seeded into existing pastures can provide a source of forage during late summer or early fall.
- Multiple accessions of pigeonpea were obtained from ICRISAT in India and are being evaluated in field plots at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Dallas;
